Review: San San Hortaleza, M.D. BB Cream

A couple of months ago, HBC, which happens to be one of my favorite local makeup and skin care stores, released two new face makeup items, one of which was a BB Cream.

Yey! The other one was a foundation cream, but I'll talk about that in another post.

Description: Contains squalene, hyaluronic acid, Vitamins A, C and E, SPF 43 and antioxidant. The San San Hortaleza, M.D. BB Cream claims to lighten dark spots, nourish skin and protect it from sun damage.

Ingredients

It's packaged in a tube (colored blue like most of San San products), and the product is dispensed through a pump.

I honestly don't have major complaints with the packaging.

Now let's move on to the swatches. Oh, by the way, this product only comes in one shade like most BB creams (as of writing, that is).

*Swatches without flash
The shade isn't like that of most BB creams as this one comes in a more tan and warmer tone. I appreciate HBC's effort in making a BB cream that would suit those with medium to tan skin tone, and I'm sure a lot of Pinays would, too. The consistency is more on the thicker side, but just for reference, it is not as thick as the San San Soleil Matte Foundation. It's still easy to apply and blend on the skin, though. I like using my fingers to apply this but I also sometimes use a dense flat top brush.

Here's how it looks on my face.

Without flash
The shade doesn't totally match my skin tone - it's a bit dark for my skin. This would look great on people with medium/morena skin tone. But in photos taken with flash and in really bright lighting, it appears lighter, probably because of the SPF. Case in point...

Shade aside, I still like this BB cream. Why? It has a semi-matte finish, and the coverage is awesome! As you can see in the before-and-after photos above, the BB cream can even out my skin tone and cover up the redness and small blemishes on my face with just one layer, making my face look flawless. It can give medium to full coverage, but to avoid the 'too made up' or cakey look, I just use up to a pump of product. I have oily skin, and this BB cream stays put on my face for a good number of hours although I still get oily after just about two hours so I need to blot or retouch with powder throughout the day.

Thumbs up:
  • Great coverage! - Can even out my skin tone and conceal redness and blemishes
  • Easy to apply and sets quickly
  • Semi-matte finish, not dewy
  • Doesn't cake on me - But I only use one pump of product because it can deliver my desired coverage with just that and the texture is on the thicker side
  • Stays put for a good number of hours
  • Doesn't irritate my skin
  • Has SPF 43, Vitamins A, C and E
  • Comes in a pump packaging
  • Available in all HBC outlets
  • Affordable - Priced at P149.75 for 30 mL of product

Thumbs down:
  • Shade selection - I wish there were more shades, or at least a lighter one. But I believe, with the right shade of setting powder, I can make this BB cream work for me :)
  • Not really recommended for those with oily skin because of the creamy texture

Over-all, I like the coverage a lot but I hope they come up with a lighter shade too (I just got news that HBC is coming up with a lighter shade soon. Yey for that!). But if you're looking for a BB cream that will look good for medium skin tones, this just might be the one you're looking for! It's so affordable (the most inexpensive BB cream I've seen, actually), why not give it a try? :)

  7. I like the prize and that it has a semi-matte finish. I mean, I know BB creams are supposed to be dewy, but I'm just not all for that super dewy look that most BB creams provide. I also love the packaging. Great review! Thanks! :)

  10. I have oily skin too and just like with other foundations, I still get oily with this after just a few hours. I've yet to find an oil-controlling foundation/BB cream :) Thanks for dropping by, Camilla! :)

  11. Not yet but I've seen a few reviews. I want to try them because their coverage looks great. The finish is the thing I'm worried about, though. Parang they're not so suitable rin for oily skin. But i'll check them out next time I go to the mall :)

  18. Oh sayang. Kung gagamitin mo man 'to, medyo madalas dalas ka magbblot. Haha. Hirap maghanap ng foundation/BB cream no? Lalo na pag oily skin. Haha walang tumatagal sa akin, lahat madali ako maging oily.

  21. I love this too, but I switched to Ever Bilena's Whitening BB Cream because its strong yellow undertones match my skin perfectly. I hope San San also comes up with a yellow-toned BB cream.
