Do You Look at the Ingredients List?

Hey everyone, I just want to share to you one of my fave post series from Giorgia's beauty blog (Beautiful with Brains). This series is called "Know Your Ingredients." Every week, Giorgia posts about one chemical (that is commonly used in beauty and skin care products) and briefly explains how it functions as a cosmetic ingredient. This series of hers reminds me of my laboratory-report-making days. If you've read the "About" page of my blog, then you would have known that I am a graduate in chemistry. In most of our lab classes, we were required to list down all of the chemicals/reagents that we would be using for an exercise, and then research about those reagents and write down their structures and properties. Of course, that also includes researching about the hazards and precautions to help us become aware of how potentially toxic the chemicals could be and to help us know how to handle those chemicals properly.

My point is that I think it's nice to know what's in the products that we use and why it is there. I admit that even I ignore ingredients lists most of the time but seeing Giorgia's posts make me say, "Oooooh, so that's what *it* is for!" There are lots of websites out there that have a list of common cosmetic ingredients, including the potentially toxic ones. Familiarizing ourselves with these groups of chemicals is an important step in taking care of our face, skin and health. But of course it doesn't mean that when a product contains a potentially harmful ingredient, it's not a "good" product, if you know what I mean. There's a reason why that chemical is in that product. The amount of chemical present, usage frequency, and whatnot also matter. LOL I'm going all chem-y with you in this post, am I not? ;]

Anyway, I hope you find this helpful! :)

Here's a lab picture to end this post :)

  2. I freaked out when I found out that carmine, a red dye used as colorants for blushes, lipsticks, eyeshadows, etc. came from crushed beetles!

So I got cautious about the ingredients found in cosmetics :))

  15. I look at ingredients. Sometimes I don't look at the description on the package na nga. Like when it says non-comedogenic--I don't believe it. I look at the ingredients list and decide for myself.
